US–EU Critical Minerals Pact Aims to Strengthen Supply Chains
(MENAFN) The United States and the European Union formalized a memorandum of understanding on essential minerals on Friday, an action that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized as a “very important gathering” intended to reinforce both economic collaboration and security alignment.
During the official ceremony, Rubio explained that the accord is designed to guarantee “reliable, affordable sources” of vital minerals. He highlighted that the initiative reflects increasing global recognition—particularly among Western allies in Europe—of how crucial supply networks and key mineral resources are to economic prosperity and national defense. Rubio cautioned that dependence on supplies “dominated by one or two places is a non-acceptable risk,” underscoring the urgency of broadening sourcing strategies.
European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic remarked that the agreement would strengthen transatlantic relations while advancing mutual ambitions. He stated, “With this memorandum, I believe we will be more strategic together and achieve our goals much faster,” adding that it is essential to convert the framework into “concrete, tangible” initiatives that benefit the business sector.
