Sri Lanka Korea Business Council Hosts South Korea Trade Session

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The Sri Lanka–Korea Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce hosted an awareness session titled“Doing Business with South Korea,” bringing together key stakeholders to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea.

The event was attended by Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Sri Lanka, Miyon Lee, along with embassy officials including Deputy Head of Mission Eunji Kang and Research Officer Minwoo Jo. A panel of experts featured representatives from KOTRA, Sri Lanka's Department of Commerce, and trade officials based in South Korea, alongside participation from KOICA.

Discussions provided an overview of existing trade and investment relations while identifying high-potential export sectors for Sri Lankan businesses. The session also examined emerging market trends, future opportunities and the effective use of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA), including guidance on compliance and eligibility for exporters seeking entry into the Korean market.

Ambassador Lee commended Sri Lanka's progress in economic stabilisation, institutional reforms and anti-corruption efforts, noting these as positive signals for investors. She emphasised the need to strengthen an investment-friendly environment, support ongoing Korean ventures and identify new areas for collaboration.

She also highlighted the importance of tariff reforms, expansion of Free Trade Agreements and implementation of trade facilitation measures such as the National Single Window system. Reference was made to Sri Lanka's interest in joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which could expand access to broader Asian markets.

Sri Lanka–Korea Business Council President Shamil Mendis stressed the importance of focusing on East Asian markets and reaffirmed the Council's role in promoting trade, investment and business collaboration.

The session concluded with strong engagement from importers, exporters and SMEs, reflecting growing interest in expanding Sri Lanka–South Korea economic partnerships.
