Hamas Says Skipping Gaza Ceasefire Phase One Contradicts Trump Plan

(MENAFN) A spokesperson for Hamas said that calls for disarmament while bypassing the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement go against what he described as US President Donald Trump’s plan for the territory, according to remarks reported on Wednesday.

Hazem Qassem said that tying the implementation of ceasefire commitments in Gaza to the issue of disarmament would further complicate negotiations over a second phase of the deal, as stated by reports.

His comments came after recent talks in Cairo involving Hamas Gaza leader Khalil al-Hayya, Egyptian officials, the high representative for Gaza in the Board of Peace Nikolay Mladenov, and senior US adviser Aryeh Lightstone.

Qassem urged that the obligations outlined in the first phase of the agreement should be fully implemented before any discussion moves forward to later stages.

The ceasefire framework, announced last September by Trump, was presented as a plan to end the conflict in Gaza. Phase one reportedly includes a ceasefire, a partial Israeli withdrawal, the release of remaining Israeli captives, and the entry of hundreds of humanitarian aid trucks into the enclave.

Hamas has said it fulfilled its commitments under the first phase by releasing Israeli captives, while accusing Israel of failing to meet its humanitarian obligations and continuing military operations. According to those claims, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured amid ongoing violence.
