Cargo Ship Damaged in Incident Near Oman
(MENAFN) A commercial container vessel was damaged after coming under fire near the coast of Oman, with authorities reporting that all crew members are safe, according to maritime security updates.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report on Wednesday concerning an incident involving a commercial ship located about 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
Based on the report from the vessel’s master, a gunboat believed to be associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) approached the ship. The gunboat reportedly did not issue any prior radio warning before opening fire.
UKMTO stated that the attack caused “heavy damage” to the vessel’s bridge. However, it added that there were no fires on board and no environmental contamination had been detected.
“All crew reported safe,” the statement confirmed, indicating that there were no casualties among those on board.
