32,000 Residents' Data Exposed in Netherlands Cyberattack
(MENAFN) Personal data belonging to tens of thousands of residents in the eastern Netherlands has been compromised following a cyberattack on the servers of Epe municipality, according to media reports Thursday.
Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that Epe municipality disclosed the breach last month — only after completing an extensive investigation — confirming that 32,000 residents had been affected.
The stolen data included contact details of residents across the municipality, while identification document copies belonging to more than 1,000 individuals were also seized. Critically, the compromised server was used exclusively by employees who joined the service after 2022.
Mayor Tom Horn acknowledged the gravity of the breach, stating: "As a municipality, we are supposed to take good care of citizens' data, and we take that seriously. Unfortunately, things went wrong anyway."
In response, municipal authorities are preparing to send written notifications to all residents, outlining the scope of the incident and advising steps to prevent data misuse.
