UN Demands Accountability After Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations has called for an immediate halt to attacks on peacekeepers after a second UN personnel member died following a recent incident in southern Lebanon, according to statements released Wednesday.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep sorrow over the death of a French soldier serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), who was injured in an April 18 attack that also resulted in one other fatality and several injuries.

His spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement that this incident is part of a troubling series of recent attacks affecting UN peacekeeping personnel in the region.

"This was one of several incidents in recent weeks to have resulted in the deaths and serious injury of peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL," Dujarric said.

He added that the Secretary-General has urged all parties involved to comply fully with international legal obligations and to ensure the protection and safety of UN staff operating in the area.

"Attacks on peacekeepers must stop. They are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and may amount to war crimes,” he added.

He further emphasized that all such incidents must be thoroughly investigated, with those responsible held accountable through proper legal processes.

Separately, French authorities confirmed the death of soldier Anicet Girardin, who had been evacuated to France after sustaining injuries in the same attack that killed Adjutant Florian Montorio and wounded additional French personnel.
