Haaretz Notes Uneven Public Reaction to Gaza Deaths, Lebanon Statue Damage
(MENAFN) The deaths of Palestinians and the widespread destruction in Gaza and the West Bank have drawn less public empathy than the damage to a statue of Jesus destroyed by an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon, according to reports citing Haaretz.
Video footage that circulated on Sunday showed an Israeli soldier using a pickaxe to demolish a statue of Jesus in the town of Debel in southern Lebanon.
Following the incident, senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, quickly condemned the act. Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by what happened, while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the soldier’s behavior as “grave and disgraceful.”
The Israeli army also stated that the soldier involved, along with another who filmed the act, were removed from combat duties and sentenced to 30 days of military detention.
According to the report, Haaretz argued that this swift response stood in contrast to what it described as a lack of comparable public or official reaction to alleged misconduct and civilian harm during military operations in Gaza and the West Bank.
