Haaretz Criticizes Uneven Outrage Over Religious Symbol Damage

(MENAFN) A recent commentary cited by reports argues that reactions to the killing of Palestinians and widespread destruction in Gaza and the West Bank have drawn less public empathy than the backlash over the destruction of a religious statue involving an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon.

Footage circulating online showed a soldier striking a statue of Jesus with a pickaxe in the Lebanese town of Debel. The incident triggered swift condemnation from Israeli leadership.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed being “stunned and saddened" by what occurred, while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the act as “grave and disgraceful.” The Israeli military also stated that the soldier involved, along with another who documented the act, were removed from combat duties and received a period of military detention.

According to the same reporting, these rapid official responses were contrasted with what critics describe as a lack of comparable condemnation for misconduct by soldiers during operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

The report references the broader context of the conflict in Gaza, where tens of thousands of deaths have been reported over the course of the war. It also notes that, during the fighting, there have been instances in which soldiers shared images and videos from inside civilian homes and combat zones on social media platforms.
