Lebanon's Leader Pushes to Extend Israel Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed Wednesday that active diplomatic contacts are underway to prolong the fragile ceasefire with Israel that took hold on April 17, signaling Beirut's determination to convert the temporary truce into a broader, more durable arrangement.
"Contacts are ongoing to extend the ceasefire period," Aoun said during a meeting with a parliamentary committee, as cited by a presidency statement.
The Lebanese president made clear that his administration would pursue every available avenue to stabilize the country's deteriorating situation. "We will not spare any effort to end the abnormal situation Lebanon is currently experiencing," he added.
Aoun stressed that all ongoing diplomatic engagement is anchored in a firm set of national priorities. "In all the contacts and consultations, the primary goals are to preserve Lebanese sovereignty over all its territory," he said.
Looking ahead to forthcoming negotiations, Aoun outlined a comprehensive agenda centered on "ending Israeli attacks entirely, achieving Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of detainees, deployment of the army up to international borders, and reconstructing what was destroyed during this war."
The diplomatic momentum has been building steadily. Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors held a landmark meeting in Washington on April 14 — their first direct encounter in 43 years — during which both sides agreed to open formal peace negotiations. Israeli media reported that a second round of those talks is scheduled for Thursday in the American capital.
The push for peace comes amid a staggering humanitarian toll. Since launching its offensive in Lebanon on March 2, Israel has killed approximately 2,300 people, wounded more than 7,500, and forced over one million others from their homes, according to official figures. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the 10-day ceasefire on April 17, providing a narrow but critical diplomatic opening that both sides now appear cautiously willing to extend.
