Hungary’s Next PM Indicates Potential ICC Enforcement Against Netanyahu

(MENAFN) Hungary’s next prime minister, Peter Magyar, has stated that he would enforce an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to enter Hungarian territory, signaling a shift from the previous government’s approach.

At a press briefing, Magyar said his government would halt the planned withdrawal from the ICC initiated under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He emphasized that, as a member state, Hungary is legally required to comply with ICC arrest warrants.

The ICC issued warrants in 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations related to war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Magyar’s remarks follow reports that he had spoken directly with Netanyahu after his party’s recent electoral victory. While confirming the communication, he downplayed claims that he extended a specific invitation, explaining that he had been in contact with several international leaders regarding an upcoming commemorative event marking the anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 uprising.
