Russia Expands Army Corruption Crackdown with New Arrest
(MENAFN) According to reports, Russian authorities have detained another senior military-linked official on corruption charges as part of an ongoing wider crackdown within the defense sector.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation said Vitaly Melimuk, deputy director general of Patriot Park—a military exhibition complex linked to the Defense Ministry—was arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe worth 18 million rubles (around $241,320).
Officials stated that Melimuk is under investigation in connection with operations and logistical support for the Central Park Patriot institution under the Russian Defense Ministry. He has been charged under Part 6 of Article 290 of the Russian Criminal Code, which relates to receiving a bribe on a particularly large scale.
The case is the latest in a series of corruption-related arrests targeting military officials in Russia. Authorities have detained and prosecuted dozens of defense-sector figures since a major anti-corruption campaign began in April 2024.
That campaign was initially triggered by the arrest of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov and later expanded following leadership changes in the Defense Ministry, including the appointment of economist Andrey Belousov as defense minister, replacing Sergey Shoigu.
The ongoing investigations have resulted in one of the most extensive corruption crackdowns within Russia’s military establishment in recent years, signaling sustained efforts to address alleged financial misconduct in defense-related institutions.
