US to Host 2nd Round of Lebanon–Israel Talks in Washington
(MENAFN) According to reports, the United States is set to host a new round of diplomatic talks between Lebanon and Israel this week in Washington, with US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee expected to take part in the discussions.
A State Department spokesperson said the second round of ambassador-level negotiations will take place on Thursday at the State Department, following what officials described as “productive engagement” during an initial meeting held on April 14.
The upcoming session will include senior US officials, among them Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Counselor Michael Needham. The delegation is also expected to feature US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter.
The spokesperson said the US will continue to “facilitate direct, good-faith discussions between the two governments,” as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at managing tensions between the sides.
The talks come shortly after a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect on Friday. However, tensions remain high, with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stating that Israel intends to retain control over areas it occupied in southern Lebanon during its recent military operations.
Since March 2, Israeli operations in Lebanon have reportedly resulted in around 2,300 deaths, more than 7,500 injuries, and the displacement of over 1 million people, according to official figures cited in the report.
The Washington talks are being closely watched as part of broader efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation in the region.
