US Envoy Huckabee to join US-hosted Lebanon-Israel talks in Washington
(MENAFN) US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee is expected to take part in a new round of US-mediated talks between Lebanon and Israel this week in Washington, according to a State Department spokesperson.
The discussions are scheduled for Thursday at the State Department and will mark the second round of ambassador-level meetings, following what officials described as “productive engagement” during earlier talks held on April 14.
Senior US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Counselor Michael Needham, are also expected to attend.
Other participants include US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter.
"We will continue to facilitate direct, good-faith discussions between the two governments," the spokesperson added.
The diplomatic effort comes shortly after a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect on Friday.
However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel intends to maintain control over areas it occupied in southern Lebanon during recent military operations.
According to official figures cited in the report, ongoing hostilities since early March have resulted in thousands of deaths, widespread injuries, and the displacement of more than one million people in Lebanon.
