Lufthansa Reduces Summer Flights as Iran Conflict Drives Up Fuel Prices

(MENAFN) Lufthansa Group said Tuesday it is reducing about 20,000 short-haul flights from its summer schedule through October as it works to reduce fuel expenses that have increased since the escalation of the Iran conflict.

The German airline group said the cuts will reduce overall capacity by less than 1% in available seat kilometers, while saving more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel.

Most of the reductions target less profitable short-distance routes from major hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich, while the company plans to strengthen selected services in Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels as part of a wider network adjustment across its European operations.

According to the company, initial adjustments already took effect through the end of May, including around 120 daily flight cancellations starting Tuesday, with affected passengers notified.

Several destinations have been temporarily removed from the schedule, including routes to cities in Poland and Norway, while a number of other connections are being rerouted or consolidated through different hubs within the group.

Lufthansa said the changes are intended to improve operational efficiency across its network while maintaining long-haul connectivity and overall global route stability.
