Denmark Opts for European SAMP/T NG Over US Rival
(MENAFN) Denmark has selected the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG air defense system over the American-made Patriot, delivering Europe's next-generation missile defense technology its first-ever export victory, Thales Group confirmed Tuesday.
"This first export contract includes the supply of SAMP/T NG sections, which are scheduled to be delivered from 2028," the manufacturer said in a statement.
The landmark agreement formally positions Denmark as the third nation to join the SAMP/T NG program, alongside the system's co-developers France and Italy — a significant milestone for European defense industry ambitions.
"Denmark will benefit from the increased production capacity for the SAMP/T NG system and the production of Aster missiles," the statement added.
Copenhagen's decision to favor the European platform over the US-manufactured Patriot was first made in September, and Tuesday's announcement by Thales puts the deal on an official footing, with hardware deliveries slated to begin in 2028.
The SAMP/T NG is produced by Eurosam, a joint venture uniting Thales with missile manufacturer MBDA's French and Italian divisions — a collaboration that has now secured its first foothold beyond its founding nations. The contract is widely seen as a boost to European strategic autonomy in an era of heightened continental security concerns.
