EU Sees No Support to Suspend Israel Association Agreement
(MENAFN) The European Union’s foreign policy chief said Tuesday that member states failed to reach support for proposals to suspend or partially suspend the bloc’s Association Agreement with Israel.
Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Kaja Kallas said several countries had floated options ranging from a full suspension of the agreement to targeted trade restrictions on goods originating from settlements.
However, she noted that opposition from multiple member states prevented any common position from forming. She emphasized that such measures require unanimous backing, which was not achieved.
Kallas added that while no agreement was reached, discussions on the issue will continue among member states.
Her comments followed statements from Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who said the idea of suspending the agreement had effectively been set aside for now, with further discussions expected next month on possible alternatives.
EU countries remain divided on the issue. Spain and Ireland have pushed for suspending parts of the agreement, while others, including Germany, have opposed such steps, reflecting ongoing differences over how the bloc should handle its trade and political relationship with Israel.
