Over 300 Displaced as Fire Tears Through Philippines Neighborhood
(MENAFN) A devastating fire ripped through a crowded residential district in Bacolod City in the central Philippines late Tuesday, reducing dozens of homes to rubble and forcing more than 300 residents into emergency shelters, local media reported Wednesday.
The inferno erupted in the Barangay area, tearing through the Purok Ramon Magsaysay Dawis community before emergency crews could contain the damage, according to media, which cited Richelle Verdeprado-Mangga, head of the city's Department of Social Services and Development.
At least 103 families — comprising 307 individuals — were uprooted from their homes as the blaze consumed the tightly packed neighborhood. Preliminary damage assessments confirmed 27 houses were completely gutted, with 10 additional structures sustaining partial damage. However, authorities cautioned that the final toll could climb further as on-ground verification efforts continue.
Emergency response teams have been rapidly mobilized to support displaced residents, the majority of whom have been transferred to designated evacuation centers while recovery operations get underway.
No casualties were immediately reported, though officials have yet to issue a comprehensive situation update as assessments remain ongoing.
