Russia, North Korea Move to Forge Stronger Security Ties
(MENAFN) Moscow and Pyongyang have moved to strengthen their security apparatus partnership, announcing expanded cooperation in law enforcement following high-level ministerial talks held in the North Korean capital, state media reported Wednesday.
Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev met with North Korea's Public Security Minister Pang Tu-sop at Pyongyang's Assembly Hall on Tuesday, according to North Korean media. Kolokoltsev had arrived in the city on Monday for a formal working visit.
The two officials exchanged insights on law enforcement practices and identified pathways to deepen institutional cooperation between their respective security and internal affairs agencies. The discussions were characterized as unfolding in a "friendly atmosphere," reflecting the increasingly warm relations between the two nations.
The meeting is the latest milestone in a relationship that has evolved significantly over the past decade, culminating in a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed in 2024 — which includes a mutual military assistance clause obligating both nations to defend each other in the event of third-party aggression.
That military dimension has already been tested on the battlefield. South Korea's intelligence agency reports that Pyongyang dispatched an estimated 15,000 combat troops to bolster Russia's war effort in Ukraine, with casualties estimated at around 2,000 soldiers. In August 2025, an additional 1,000 military engineers were deployed to Russia's Kursk region to assist in demining operations following intense fighting against Ukrainian forces.
