Israel Issues Warning to Lebanon Over Ceasefire Breach
(MENAFN) Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning Tuesday, saying Israel could escalate military operations if Lebanon fails to uphold its obligations under the current ceasefire agreement.
Addressing the national Memorial Day ceremony for fallen soldiers at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, Katz underscored Israel’s strategic objectives, stating that "the ultimate goal of our campaign in Lebanon is to disarm Hezbollah and remove the threat from Israel's northern communities, through a combination of military and political measures."
His remarks come amid a fragile truce between Israel and Lebanon, which took effect at midnight local time on April 16 following an earlier announcement by US President Donald Trump.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued launching targeted strikes against Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure. The military has defended these actions as necessary measures to prevent imminent threats to its personnel.
Tensions remain high along the border, with uncertainty growing over whether the ceasefire can hold in the coming days as both sides weigh their next moves.
