Turkey Hails Turkmen Governor Appointment in Kirkuk as Historic Move

According to a statement from Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry, Mehmet Seman Agaoglu, head of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, officially took office as Kirkuk’s governor after receiving his appointment certificate from Iraq’s president on Monday. He had been elected earlier by the Kirkuk Provincial Council on April 16.
The ministry said the selection of a Turkmen governor in a province marked by cultural diversity and a pluralistic social structure represents a significant milestone for representation and social cohesion.
It added that the decision reflects long-standing rights of the Turkmen community, which it described as an essential component of both Kirkuk and Iraq, according to the statement.
The ministry also highlighted that rotating senior administrative positions among Kirkuk’s different communities through consensus is seen as a fair arrangement benefiting all groups in the province.
