Muslim Civil Rights Groups Urge Release of Palestinian Leader Held by ICE
(MENAFN) A coalition of Muslim civil rights organizations gathered outside the US Supreme Court to demand the immediate release of Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian community leader who has lived in the United States for over three decades after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 30.
Sarsour, who leads the Islamic Society of Milwaukee and serves on the board of American Muslims for Palestine, was stopped near his home by more than ten ICE agents while driving on March 30. He was then taken into custody.
Following his arrest, he was first held at a detention facility in Chicago before being transferred to another center in Indiana. Supporters say he has been a lawful permanent resident in the US for more than 32 years.
On Monday, civil rights organizations including CAIR, the US Council of Muslim Organizations, and other advocacy groups held a joint press conference calling for his immediate release.
They argued that he is being targeted because of his public support for Palestine.
Since the beginning of the current administration, authorities have reportedly taken action against several pro-Palestinian figures, including visa denials and deportation efforts linked to their activism in support of Palestinian rights.
