Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter Hosts 'Immersive Experience' At Art Basel

Art Basel may be known for blue-chip booths and packed fair aisles, but this June it will also host a rare return to the booth by Thomas Bangalter, one half of the French electronic duo Daft Punk. Bangalter is scheduled to take over Hall 1.1 South at Messe Basel on Saturday, June 20, in an event produced by Nordstern Basel with the cooperation of Art Basel and Fondation Beyeler.

The booking matters because Bangalter has only recently begun performing again after a long absence. Last October, he played his first DJ set since 2009, then appeared again in London in February alongside Fred Again.... For listeners who have followed Daft Punk's carefully managed public silence, the Basel date adds another chapter to a comeback that has unfolded slowly and on Bangalter's own terms.

Daft Punk last performed live together at the Grammys in 2017, and their last official tour dates back to 2007. That history gives the Basel appearance a particular charge: it is not a reunion, but it does place one of electronic music's most closely watched figures back in front of an audience during one of the art world's busiest weeks.

For Art Basel, the event also reflects the fair's long-standing ability to blur the line between exhibition culture and nightlife, drawing in audiences whose interests extend well beyond the booth.
