Major Fire Destroys Hundreds of Homes in Malaysian Floating Village

(MENAFN) According to reports, a large fire tore through a floating village in Malaysia early Sunday, destroying hundreds of homes and prompting a wide-scale emergency response from local authorities.

The blaze swept through Kampung Bahagia, a stilted settlement in the coastal city of Sandakan, where around 200 houses were reported to have been burned down, as stated by local media.

No casualties have been reported so far.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed shock upon learning of the incident, while federal and state authorities coordinated emergency relief efforts, including temporary shelter and basic assistance for those affected.

Fire and rescue officials said dozens of firefighters were deployed after the emergency call was received in the early hours of the morning, with teams working to bring the flames under control.

Disaster management authorities in the district later assessed the area and concluded that the affected homes were no longer safe for habitation, following extensive damage caused by the fire.
