Macron Says French Soldier Killed in Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

(MENAFN) A French soldier has been killed and three others injured in an attack in southern Lebanon targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to French President Emmanuel Macron.

In a post on the US social media platform X, Macron said: "Sergeant Major Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment in Montauban was killed this morning in southern Lebanon during an attack against UNIFIL."

He added that three additional personnel were wounded and later evacuated for treatment.

"The nation bows in respect and expresses its support to the families of our soldiers and to all our military personnel committed to peace in Lebanon," Macron said.

Macron also stated that early indications point to Hezbollah being behind the attack. "Everything suggests that Hezbollah is responsible for this attack," he said.

He further called on Lebanese authorities to take immediate action, urging them to "immediately arrest those responsible and take responsibility alongside UNIFIL."
