German Opposition Links Arms Sales to Israel to Escalation in Iran War
(MENAFN) Germany’s opposition party The Left has accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government of contributing to the conflict involving Iran by approving arms exports to Israel.
Lawmaker Ulrich Thoden argued that the “profit interests of the military-industrial complex” do not support peace efforts, but instead contribute to ongoing wars that cause widespread human and economic damage. He called for a full and immediate halt to all arms exports to Israel.
According to information cited from the Economic Ministry following a parliamentary inquiry, arms shipments to Israel were authorized during the initial weeks of the Iran conflict, despite Germany’s constitutional restrictions on exporting weapons to active war zones.
Between February 28 and March 27, Berlin approved military exports to Israel valued at approximately €6.6 million (around $7.78 million).
Germany remains one of Israel’s key allies, with government officials frequently stating that the country has a special responsibility for Israel’s security due to its historical responsibility stemming from the Nazi era.
