Trump Tells Dutch Royals Economic Pressure Is Needed to End Iran War

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump told the Dutch king and queen during a private dinner that increasing economic pressure on Iran is essential to quickly ending the war, according to a media outlet.

Trump reportedly said that intensifying pressure is the only way to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table.

However, officials and analysts cited in the report warned that Washington’s move toward enforcing a unilateral naval blockade on Iranian ports may take months or longer before it creates enough economic strain to force concessions.

Administration officials said Trump has set two main conditions for any potential deal: Iran must suspend uranium enrichment for at least 20 years—though he is pushing for a longer period—and all enriched uranium must be removed from Iranian territory. Iran, meanwhile, has proposed a five-year freeze and insists on retaining its stockpile.

Several European countries, including the Netherlands, have reportedly refused to take part in the blockade. Saudi Arabia has also urged Washington to reconsider, warning that Iran could respond through regional proxy groups that might disrupt shipping in the Red Sea, potentially driving up global oil prices.

According to the report, US Central Command began implementing the blockade on Monday following the breakdown of direct US-Iran talks held in Pakistan over the weekend, marking the first formal negotiations since the conflict began on Feb. 28.
