Lebanon Hospital Damaged in Israeli Strikes, WHO Chief Says

(MENAFN) The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Wednesday that Israeli airstrikes near Tebnine Government Hospital in southern Lebanon have damaged the facility and left 11 staff members injured.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus disclosed the incidents via the U.S. social media platform X, revealing that two separate Israeli strikes on Sunday and Tuesday landed in close proximity to the hospital — described as "one of the busiest trauma centers" in southern Lebanon — causing structural and operational damage.

The emergency department bore the brunt of the impact, with critical equipment including ventilators, monitors, stretchers, and trolleys rendered inoperable. The facility's pharmacy and outpatient clinics sustained damage as well. Tedros confirmed that the WHO has mobilized resources to fast-track urgent repairs while the hospital struggles to maintain continuity of care under mounting pressure.

The WHO chief presented a grim cumulative toll since Israeli operations escalated in Lebanon beginning in March, with the agency documenting 133 attacks on healthcare infrastructure — claiming 88 lives and injuring 206 others. Fifteen hospitals and seven primary healthcare centers have sustained damage, while five hospitals and 56 primary healthcare centers have ceased operations entirely.

"I reiterate the call for the immediate protection of health care facilities, health workers, ambulances and patients," Tedros said.

He further pressed for unrestricted and sustained humanitarian access across Lebanon, insisting that "life-saving services can be delivered without delay and without risk to those providing or receiving care."

Israel's military campaign in Lebanon, launched on March 2 — shortly after Tehran entered the regional conflict and Hezbollah retaliated in solidarity with its Iranian ally — has killed more than 2,000 people and forcibly displaced approximately one million others.
