US Plans Major Troop Buildup in Middle East Amid Iran Tensions
(MENAFN) The United States is preparing to send thousands of additional troops to the Middle East in the coming days as part of efforts to increase pressure on Iran to reach a deal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, according to a report.
The reinforcements are said to include about 6,000 personnel linked to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its accompanying naval group, based on information from current and former officials speaking anonymously.
In addition, another 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected to arrive toward the end of April.
The buildup would add to already significant US military presence in the region as a fragile two-week ceasefire approaches its April 22 deadline.
These forces would join an estimated 50,000 US troops already deployed in operations focused on countering Iran, according to Pentagon figures cited in the report.
The report also indicated that the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering possible airstrikes or ground operations if the ceasefire collapses.
Recent negotiations were held in Islamabad over the weekend in an attempt to end the US-Israeli conflict with Iran that began on February 28, but no agreement was reached. Diplomatic efforts for another round of talks are ongoing.
