Kremlin Rules Out Putin–Trump Meeting in China for Now
(MENAFN) The Kremlin said on Wednesday that there are currently no plans for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their upcoming visits to China.
“There are no such plans at the moment,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing in Moscow, responding to questions about whether the two leaders might meet next month in China.
Peskov confirmed that preparations are ongoing for Putin’s visit to China and noted that high-level diplomatic contacts are also taking place in connection with the trip. He added that details about the timing of such engagements would be released later.
His comments follow remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said after a recent visit to Beijing that Putin is expected to travel to China in the first half of the year.
Earlier reports in Russian media, citing unnamed sources, suggested that Putin’s visit could take place in the second half of May, with preliminary scheduling discussions pointing to the week of May 18.
Putin last visited China in September of last year, when he attended a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin and later participated in a military parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
