Advocacy Group Says Barghouti Faces Brutal Assaults in Israeli Prison
(MENAFN) Prominent Palestinian figure Marwan Barghouti has been subjected to what an advocacy campaign described as “brutal” assaults inside Israeli detention facilities, including multiple beatings within a single month, according to reports.
The “Free Marwan” international campaign said Barghouti experienced renewed violent treatment while being held in solitary confinement at Megiddo and Ramon prisons in northern and southern Israel, coinciding with the approach of the 24th anniversary of his arrest.
Barghouti was detained in 2002 by Israeli forces and is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of directing armed groups responsible for attacks that killed and injured Israelis during the second Palestinian intifada.
The campaign said Barghouti told his lawyer during a Sunday visit that he had suffered repeated physical assaults in recent weeks.
According to the group, prison security units attacked him on three separate occasions—March 24, March 25, and April 8—using force that resulted in injuries and bleeding, while no medical treatment was provided.
It further alleged that he has been subjected to a broader pattern of abuse since the start of the war in Gaza, describing it as a “systematic series of previous brutal assaults,” according to the advocacy campaign.
