Somalia Says Army Killed Al-Shabaab Members in Large-Scale Offensive

(MENAFN) Somalia’s Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that national army units, working alongside regional security forces, carried out a large-scale military operation in the country’s southern regions, killing 27 al-Shabaab militants, including individuals described as senior members of the group, according to reports.

The ministry said the operations took place across parts of the Jilib, Hagar, and Afmadow districts in the Middle and Lower Juba regions, where government forces advanced on the ground while targeting al-Shabaab positions.

According to the same statement, airstrikes conducted with support from international partners were carried out in coordination with the ground offensive, increasing pressure on militants believed to be hiding in those areas.

Authorities also reported the seizure of weapons, military supplies, and landmines that were allegedly intended for use against civilians.

The Defense Ministry added that Somali National Armed Forces will continue ongoing operations to track remaining al-Shabaab elements, aiming to strengthen security, stability, and civilian protection across the country, according to reports.
