Netanyahu Says Europe Lacks Moral Clarity, Points to Israel as Example

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Europe has “much to learn” from Israel, arguing that the continent is experiencing what he described as “deep moral weakness.”

His remarks came during Israel’s official Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony, where he said Europe had lost clarity in distinguishing between “good and evil.”

“Europe today is afflicted by deep moral weakness,” he said. “It has much to learn from us, especially the essential lesson of the clear moral distinction between good and evil.”

Netanyahu also stated that current circumstances require “going to war for the sake of what’s good, for the sake of life,” according to his speech.

He further claimed that Europe is weakening in its ability to defend “its identity and values,” while presenting Israel as defending Europe and “civilization against barbarism.”

The comments were made at a time of increasing European criticism over Israel’s actions in the occupied West Bank and Lebanon.

Earlier the same day, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced “deep concern” about developments in the Palestinian territories, warning against what he called a “de facto partial annexation” of the occupied West Bank.

Merz also reportedly urged Netanyahu during a phone call to begin direct peace talks with Lebanon and called for an end to hostilities in southern Lebanon.
