Qatar Urges Iran to Join Mediation Efforts, Restore Hormuz Passage
(MENAFN) Qatar has called on Iran to engage with ongoing Pakistan-led mediation initiatives aimed at ending regional conflict and restoring normal maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced disruptions since early March.
According to a statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani delivered the message during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The discussion followed recently concluded Pakistan-mediated US–Iran talks that ended without reaching an agreement.
The Qatari side said the call focused on the latest developments surrounding the ceasefire process and emphasized the importance of strengthening it to improve regional security and stability.
Sheikh Mohammed urged all parties to participate constructively in mediation efforts, saying such engagement could help address underlying causes of the crisis through dialogue and contribute to a more durable settlement that avoids renewed escalation.
He also stressed the importance of keeping maritime routes open, ensuring freedom of navigation, and preventing their use as leverage in political disputes.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region following US announcements of restrictions affecting Iranian port access, alongside broader concerns over maritime security in the Gulf.
