Two Tankers Reverse Course Near Strait of Hormuz After US Blockade
(MENAFN) Two commercial tankers altered their routes and turned back near the Strait of Hormuz after the United States began enforcing a naval blockade targeting vessels linked to Iranian ports.
Ship-tracking data showed both vessels changing course shortly after approaching the strategic waterway.
One of the ships, the Malawi-flagged Rich Starry, a tanker carrying oil and chemical products, departed from an anchorage area in the United Arab Emirates before reversing direction shortly after nearing the strait. The vessel had reportedly been headed toward China.
A second vessel, the Botswana-flagged Ostria, also changed course and returned after approaching the same maritime corridor.
The blockade, which took effect at 1400 GMT on Monday, restricts maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports.
US Central Command stated that the operation would be enforced impartially against vessels of all nationalities operating in or near Iranian coastal waters in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, while maintaining oversight of maritime movement in the region.
