UN Chief Calls for Continued US–Iran Talks, Ceasefire Respect
(MENAFN) The United Nations Secretary-General has urged the United States and Iran to maintain diplomatic engagement and ensure strict adherence to an existing ceasefire, while also calling for respect for international maritime law, including freedom of navigation.
According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Secretary-General António Guterres is encouraging both sides to continue negotiations in a “constructive” manner aimed at reaching a long-term settlement.
"Given the deeply rooted differences, an agreement cannot be reached overnight ... The ceasefire must absolutely be respected and all violations must cease," Dujarric said.
The comments follow weekend negotiations held in Islamabad that concluded without a deal.
The talks were later followed by reports of a US move to impose a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, raising further concerns about regional stability.
The UN chief also expressed appreciation for the mediation efforts of Pakistan, which hosted the discussions, as well as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Türkiye.
"He calls for the international community to continue to support these efforts.
"The Secretary-General stresses that all parties to this conflict must respect freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in line with international law," Dujarric added.
The UN reiterated that sustained diplomacy remains essential to preventing further escalation and ensuring stability in the region.
