Next Round of U.S.-Iran Talks in Islamabad Imminent

(MENAFN) A new round of high-level US-Iran nuclear negotiations will take place in Islamabad "very soon," a Pakistani government source told media on Monday, as Washington races to seal a deal ahead of President Donald Trump's scheduled visit to China next month.

"I cannot confirm the day at the moment. But it's for sure soon, in fact very soon in Islamabad," the source said, adding that Trump is eager to finalize an agreement with Tehran before the China trip.

While the names of participants are yet to be confirmed, the source indicated the meeting would involve senior officials from both sides, noting that written texts outlining demands and concessions have already been exchanged between the two parties.

Media separately reported that Trump administration officials are actively weighing the possibility of a second face-to-face meeting with Iranian counterparts before the current short-term ceasefire lapses next week. An anonymous source familiar with the deliberations told the television news network that while the meeting's realization remains uncertain, officials are already assessing potential dates and locations.

"We need to be prepared to stand something up quickly should things head in that direction," the source told media.

The White House did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The development follows marathon historic negotiations concluded Saturday in Islamabad, where senior delegations from both nations failed to produce a permanent agreement to end the US-Israeli war. Those talks — the highest-level engagement between Washington and Tehran since 1979 — were made possible by a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, though core disputes remained unresolved.

Geneva and Islamabad are both under consideration as venues for any follow-on sessions, sources familiar with the matter told media.

With the ceasefire set to expire next week, people close to the negotiations said US officials remain cautiously optimistic that a diplomatic resolution is within reach — and that an extension of the truce may be granted if talks require additional time to yield a breakthrough.
