ASEAN Urges Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
(MENAFN) Southeast Asian countries have jointly called for the secure and uninterrupted movement of ships and aircraft through the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the importance of stability in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, according to reports.
In a statement issued by the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), member states appealed for “restoration of safe, unimpeded” transit through the strategic waterway. They also urged all involved parties to ensure the protection of seafarers and commercial vessels operating in the region.
The ministers further encouraged the United States and Iran to continue diplomatic negotiations aimed at achieving a permanent resolution to their conflict and establishing long-term peace and stability.
The statement also acknowledged and welcomed mediation efforts by Pakistan, along with contributions from other parties involved in facilitating dialogue.
Referring to a recently established two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, which has been in effect since April 8, ASEAN foreign ministers called for its full and effective implementation despite ongoing fragility.
They emphasized the need for restraint on all sides, urging compliance with ceasefire terms, avoidance of further hostilities, and responsible conduct to prevent escalation. The statement also highlighted the importance of working toward a comprehensive settlement consistent with international law, the UN Charter, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
According to reports, ASEAN leaders framed the stability of the Strait of Hormuz as essential not only for regional security but also for global trade, reinforcing their call for sustained diplomatic engagement and de-escalation.
