Iraqi PM Expresses Solidarity with Lebanon Over Israeli Strikes
(MENAFN) Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has reaffirmed Iraq’s political support and solidarity with Lebanon during a phone conversation with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, according to official statements.
During the call, al-Sudani reportedly condemned the ongoing Israeli military actions targeting Lebanese territory and emphasized Iraq’s continued backing for the Lebanese state and its people. He stressed that Iraq, both its government and population, stands firmly with Lebanon in what he described as confronting “blatant assaults,” according to reports.
President Aoun expressed appreciation for Iraq’s position and its ongoing diplomatic and political support, acknowledging Baghdad’s engagement on the issue.
Both sides also highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination and urged international actors, including major powers, global institutions, and the United Nations, to take responsibility in addressing what they described as violations of Lebanese sovereignty and harm to civilians.
The discussion comes amid continued escalation in the region, with reports indicating ongoing Israeli air operations in Lebanon following cross-border hostilities involving Hezbollah since early March. The strikes have reportedly resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction, contributing to rising regional tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that military operations in Lebanon would be intensified and that Israel would not enter negotiations unless Hezbollah is disarmed and a long-term settlement is achieved, according to reports.
