Israeli Forces Detain Worshippers, Staff at Al-Aqsa Mosque
(MENAFN) Israeli forces arrested two women and an employee on Sunday inside the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem, marking the latest in a series of violations against worshippers and mosque staff. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, local sources reported that the two women were detained by Israeli forces while inside the Al-Aqsa compound and taken to an undisclosed location.
In addition to the women, Raed Zaghir, the head of the cleaning department at Al-Aqsa Mosque, was also arrested while performing his duties at the site. The Jerusalem Governorate issued a brief statement confirming the detention.
These arrests come amidst heightened tensions and escalating raids at Al-Aqsa, with stricter restrictions being imposed on worshippers and ongoing detentions and assaults targeting Palestinians at the sacred site. Earlier in the day, far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir conducted a raid at the mosque under heavy police protection.
Since 2003, Israeli police have allowed settlers to enter the mosque compound, despite ongoing protests from the Islamic Waqf Department, which manages the site. Since Ben-Gvir assumed office as Israel's national security minister in late 2022, violations at the mosque have notably increased.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is considered the third holiest site in Islam, while Jews refer to the area as the Temple Mount, claiming it was the location of two ancient Jewish temples.
