Iran Accuses US of Derailing Islamabad Talks

(MENAFN) Iran leveled a direct accusation at Washington early Monday, charging that the United States sabotaged what had been a near-breakthrough moment in nuclear negotiations — a claim that landed just hours before US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the enforcement of a sweeping naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had entered the Islamabad process in good faith, only to be met with bad faith from the other side. "We engaged with the US in good faith to end the war," he said in a statement, adding that the two parties had been "just inches away" from an "Islamabad MoU" before encountering "maximalism, shifting goalposts and a blockade" from the US side.

"Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity," Araghchi added.

CENTCOM confirmed shortly after that it would begin enforcing a full blockade on all maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports starting Monday, while exempting vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports — a carve-out aimed at limiting broader disruption to global shipping lanes.

The announcements followed the collapse of Pakistan-mediated negotiations in Islamabad on Saturday, where multiple rounds of discussions and an exchange of proposals failed to produce any binding agreement. Both delegations departed the Pakistani capital with fundamental differences intact, each acknowledging that further diplomatic engagement would be required.

The Islamabad talks were part of a broader international effort to bring an end to the US-Israeli war on Iran — a conflict that began on February 28 and had been temporarily paused under a fragile two-week ceasefire brokered just days prior.
