Norway Slams Israel's Lebanon Strikes as Breach of IHL

(MENAFN) Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide issued a sweeping condemnation of Israel's military campaign in Lebanon on Thursday, declaring that the ongoing offensive constitutes a direct breach of international humanitarian law and threatens to unravel fragile regional ceasefire arrangements.

Eide pulled no punches in his formal statement: "I condemn the massive Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which have caused immense suffering and destruction."

The minister underscored the indiscriminate nature of the strikes, noting that a significant proportion were launched without advance warning and struck civilians in the course of their daily lives. Within a single 24-hour window, he said, nearly 200 people were killed and roughly 1,000 others wounded — among them civilians and frontline healthcare workers.

"All countries, including Israel, have a duty to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Yesterday's attacks demonstrate that Israel is not acting in accordance with its obligations under international humanitarian law. This must stop," he said.

Beyond the immediate human toll, Eide raised urgent alarm over the wider geopolitical fallout, warning that the Israeli campaign is placing a fragile US-Iran ceasefire in serious jeopardy.

"The conflicts in the Middle East are interlinked, and we have made it clear that the ceasefire between the US and Iran must also include Lebanon," he added.

The scale of devastation has been staggering. Since Israel dramatically escalated its Lebanese offensive on March 2, the Lebanese Health Ministry has recorded 1,739 fatalities and 5,873 injuries — a toll that has fueled mounting international pressure on Tel Aviv to halt its military operations.
