African Union Hails U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Deal

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) has thrown its weight behind the ceasefire arrangement halting the Iran conflict, with the bloc's top official urging all parties to sustain diplomatic momentum and convert the fragile truce into a durable peace.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf welcomed Pakistan's announcement of an immediate ceasefire between Iran, the United States, and their respective allies, describing it as "a significant step that reflects commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation."

Youssouf said the development was firmly in line with the AU's longstanding position, affirming that the latest breakthrough aligns with the bloc's repeated calls for restraint and the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

The AU chief did not shy away from spelling out the toll the conflict has already taken on the African continent. "The repercussions have been felt globally, including across Africa, where disruptions to fuel supplies have driven inflation and increased the cost of basic commodities," Youssouf said.

"This ceasefire presents a critical opportunity to ease the suffering of populations affected both directly and indirectly," he said. "Sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy will be essential to consolidating these gains."

Youssouf closed his remarks with a pointed reminder that no military solution can substitute for meaningful engagement, stressing that diplomacy and dialogue — anchored in the Charter of the United Nations — remain the only credible and viable path to resolving conflicts of international scale.
