US Lawmaker Calls for Broader Ceasefire to Prevent Escalation in Lebanon
(MENAFN) A US lawmaker on Wednesday urged the administration to advocate for an expanded ceasefire in the Middle East, cautioning that continued violence in Lebanon could escalate the conflict and increase the humanitarian toll.
“Lebanon must be included in this fragile ceasefire,” Yassamin Ansari stated on the social media platform X.
Her comments came shortly after Israeli strikes on Lebanon killed more than 250 people.
“The horrific bombings and murder of hundreds of civilians in Beirut and elsewhere by Netanyahu need to end immediately,” Ansari said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
She encouraged President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to leverage their influence to address the situation.
The US and Iran announced a two-week truce on Tuesday intended to lay the groundwork for a final agreement to end a conflict initiated by Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran on February 28, which has left thousands dead and injured.
Although Pakistan, acting as a key mediator, said the truce includes Lebanon, both the US and Israel stated that Lebanon is not covered by the ceasefire.
