UN Taps Bangladeshi General to Lead UNFICYP
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Wednesday the appointment of Bangladeshi Major General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam as the new Force Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Minhazul Alam steps into the role vacated by Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri, whose tenure at the helm of the mission drew direct praise from Guterres for its dedication and measurable impact on the ground.
The incoming commander arrives with a decorated record, as Minhazul Alam "brings to the position over 30 years of leadership and command experience in the Bangladesh Army," according to an official statement.
Most recently stationed with the Army Training and Doctrine Command, Alam previously commanded the 10th Infantry Division while simultaneously overseeing operations in Cox's Bazar — one of the region's most complex humanitarian and security environments.
Over the course of his military career, Alam has accumulated a broad portfolio of command and staff roles across infantry units, with operational responsibilities encompassing counterterrorism, internal security, disaster response, and intelligence-driven missions, the statement noted.
His appointment signals the UN's continued reliance on experienced field commanders to navigate one of its longest-running peacekeeping mandates — UNFICYP has maintained a presence in Cyprus since 1964, monitoring the buffer zone between the island's divided communities.
