Israel’s IDF Says Observing Iran Ceasefire, Remains Ready to Strike Back
(MENAFN) The Israeli military confirmed Wednesday it has suspended offensive operations against Iran following a ceasefire announcement, while stressing it remains combat-ready should hostilities resume.
"In accordance with political leadership directives, the IDF (army) is observing the ceasefire in the campaign against Iran and remains on high alert in defense and ready to respond to any violation," a military spokesperson said in a statement.
Notably, the pause does not extend to all fronts. Israeli forces are pressing ahead with active ground operations in Lebanon, where the campaign against Hezbollah continues uninterrupted.
"The IDF (army) continues combat and ground operations against Hezbollah," the statement added.
The truce was declared overnight Tuesday by US President Donald Trump, who announced a two-week halt to hostilities with Tehran. The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli Air Force had carried out no strikes inside Iran from approximately 3 a.m. onward — a timeline that aligns with the ceasefire taking effect.
The deal came together under intense pressure. Just hours before the announcement, Trump had issued Iran a stark ultimatum: reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept terms — or face what he warned would be the destruction of "an entire civilization." The ceasefire was reached less than two hours before that deadline expired.
The broader conflict erupted on Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran, a campaign that has since claimed more than 1,400 lives — among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran unleashed waves of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations, while simultaneously choking commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
