European Leaders Urge Lasting Diplomatic Resolution to Iran Tensions
(MENAFN) A number of European heads of state, together with Canada, on Wednesday expressed approval of the recently declared ceasefire between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the necessity of reaching a "substantive negotiated settlement." Representatives from France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Spain, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, released a unified statement praising the temporary halt in hostilities while also extending gratitude to Pakistan and other contributors for their role in enabling the agreement.
"The goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means. We strongly encourage quick progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement," leaders said.
The officials reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding civilians in Iran and maintaining stability across the region, further highlighting that the deal may help prevent a major global energy disruption.
"We call upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. Our Governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," the statement added.
