China Voices Support for US-Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) China on Wednesday expressed support for the newly announced US-Iran ceasefire, emphasizing that Beijing had also made "efforts" to halt hostilities.

Addressing reporters at a routine briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted Pakistan’s role in easing tensions, responding to a question from a news outlet.

China "advocates for a ceasefire and resolving the conflict through political means to achieve long term stability in the Gulf and Middle East region," Mao said. She added that Beijing "made its own effort in this regard."

The development follows US President Donald Trump’s Tuesday announcement that he would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.”

Trump’s statement arrived less than two hours before a self-imposed deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and agree to terms—or face what he warned could be the destruction of “an entire civilization.”
