US Extends Congratulations to Vietnam's New Leader, PM
(MENAFN) Washington extended its congratulations on Tuesday to Communist Party General Secretary To Lam following his election as Vietnam's president, along with Le Minh Hung upon his appointment as prime minister, signaling a continued commitment to deepening bilateral ties.
The State Department used the occasion to underscore the significance of its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Hanoi — a bond forged over more than three decades of expanding friendship, mutual respect, and converging interests.
"We appreciate Vietnam's close cooperation in advancing economic prosperity, expanding people-to-people ties, and working together to promote peace and stability in a free and open Indo-Pacific," the department said in an official statement.
Washington further affirmed its intention to work in close coordination with the incoming leadership, expressing that it will look forward to working closely with the president and prime minister "to promote peace and prosperity for both our peoples and to continue to make our countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous."
On the ground in Hanoi, Vietnam's legislature voted unanimously to install To Lam as president on Tuesday, granting him a five-year mandate for the 2026-2031 term — a role he will hold concurrently with his position as general secretary. The election marks his return to the presidency following a brief inaugural tenure in 2024, according to a news outlet.
