African Union Prepares to Resume Operations in Khartoum

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) is planning to resume its activities in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, as a delegation arrives to evaluate conditions on the ground, according to reports.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem met with the visiting team, led by AU Special Envoy Mohamed Belaiche. The mission’s goal is “to determine the situation in preparation for the reopening of the African Union office in Khartoum as soon as possible,” Belaiche said.

The AU’s return comes after UN agencies recently began relocating their operations back to Khartoum, following years of functioning from Port Sudan along the Red Sea.

Sudan’s transitional authorities also moved back to the capital in January after nearly three years of operating from Port Sudan during a conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In March last year, Sudan’s de facto leader and head of the armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, declared Khartoum “free” after government forces recaptured the international airport and other key infrastructure.

Salem noted that security and living conditions in Khartoum are improving, with residents regaining access to basic services.
