France Opposes Attacks on Iran Civilian, Energy infrastructure

(MENAFN) France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Tuesday reaffirmed his country’s opposition to any assaults on Iranian civilian or energy infrastructure, amid escalating threats from the United States, cautioning that such actions risk triggering a “vicious cycle.”

"We continue to oppose strikes against civilian and energy infrastructure, it is first, because they are prohibited under the rules of war and international law," Barrot told a broadcaster.

The minister emphasized that targeting Iran’s infrastructure could spark a "new phase of retaliatory escalation," potentially dragging the Middle East and global markets into instability.

"For our own interests, we are already seeing a surge in fuel prices. If energy infrastructure in Iran were to be targeted, we could expect retaliation from the Iranian regime, further worsening an already concerning situation," Barrot warned.

He stressed that France and Europe are carefully avoiding entanglement in a conflict they did not initiate while actively seeking to mitigate repercussions and supporting regional mediation efforts.

"From the very first day, we did not approve of the Israeli-American interventions, which did not have sufficiently clearly defined objectives and which departed from international law," Barrot added.
